Traditionally a part of Eastern medicine, the tiny red schizandra berries grow on vines and are native to northern China, Japan and Korea. The fruit itself has been described as having a sweet, sour, salty, hot and bitter taste. For this description, the Chinese name for schizandra is "we-wei-zi", meaning "five-taste fruit".
